Thank you, Dan for the introduction and you really dont have to call me Mayor Bloomberg. Mr. Bloomberg would be just fine, thank you.Let me also thank Nitin for the honor of addressing you. I didnt have much choice when he called he didnt ask me to come, he told me I was coming.Let me begin with the most important words I can say today congratulations to the distinguished graduates of the great class of 2019.It was only 53 years ago that I was in your shoes, so I know youve had an amazing experience here. You have mastered the case method during your time on campus and the art of asking tough questions, like why dont the printers ever work here? Why on earth do they use the case method to teach accounting? Who thought of that?And the toughest question of all how many people does it take to finish a Scorpion Bowl at Hong Kong? For the record, the correct answer there is mora than one.HBS really doe s have a special place in my heart. Not only did I graduate from here, but so did my daughter, Emma.My foundation teamed up with the B-School and K-School to create a mayoral leadership program run by hochschulprofessor Abdelal.And my father who died a year before I was accepted to HBS has his name on the building that stands behind Baker, an honor that would have thrilled him.He and my mother raised my sister and me just five miles from here in Medford, Massachusetts. That was convenient, because I never would have made it through the B-School without my mother nearby she typed all my papers. Five decades later I still cant type or spell. But I do have the good sense to have someone proof my tweets.As you can imagine, I also had the good sense to keep my Boston connections to myself when I was Mayor of New York City, especially when the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins or Patriots came to town. I will just note that during my time in City Hall, the Giants beat the Patriots in two Super Bowls. I did my job.We moved to Medford from Brookline a few miles from here when I was four-years-old. And I can still remember my first day in our new home. A boy from up the street clunked me over the head with a jupe and I went in bleeding to my mother, which is to say I learned about Boston hospitality at a young age. I guess I had a hard head even back then.Even though I grew up just a trolley car ride away, when I first arrived on campus I felt like Id entered a whole new world. Suddenly, I was in classes with friends whose families had built major companies and had famous last names. That was a pretty radical change from my childhood. My mother once told me we never knew anybody whose name was in the nachrichtenpaper, unless it was in the crime or the obit section.I cant say I spent a lot of time across this lawn in Baker Library. My transcript is evidence of that. I was always one of those who made the top half of the class possible. I was more likely to be over the bridge at what is now the Russell House Tavern. Back then, it was a German beer hall called The Wursthaus. Its where I first learned that its better not to watch sausage being made.Now, Im sure many of you have already lined up a job. But for those who havent, dont worry. I was a month away from graduating from the B-School and I still had no idea what I wanted to do. I asked a classmate for advice. He said, Go to Wall Street. I said, I dont know anything about finance. He said, Just apply for jobs at Salomon Brothers Hutzler, and a firm named Goldman Sachs. And I said, Who are they? What do they do?Yes, I was a B-School kid who had never heard of Goldman Sachs. A lot has changed since then.Goldman, I remember, flew me down to New York and offered me a job starting at $14,000 a year not bad pay for 1966. Salomon Brothers sent me a train ticket and offered me a job for only $9,000. After the interviews, I thought I would fit much better into Salomon. But I told the senior partner, John G utfreund, I couldnt afford to pay the rent on that salary. Rent in New York was really expensive back then 120 bucks a month, as I remember.He said, how much do you need? I didnt want to be piggy about it, so I said on the spur of the moment $11,500. He said, OK, $9,000 in salary and a $2,500 loan. And he walked out of the room. This is a true story, I didnt know what to do.So I showed up two months later and I just started working. So much for my negotiating skills.For the record, my first year bonus was $500 loan forgiveness, and my second year bonus was forgiveness for the other two grand. Just remember that when you think you are getting stiffed on a bonus negotiation.But seriously, when you weigh a job offer my message to you is, even later in life when youre considering a career change, leave salary out of the equation. Make decisions based on the quality of the opportunity, and where youll have the most fun and the most room for growth.Whats important for your career is not your starting salary. Its your development and happiness. The cash will come later on.I learned a lot about finance at Salomon, but the most valuable lesson I learned had nothing to do with stocks and bonds. They were lessons on how to apply what I had learned not only here at HBS, but also from my parents, and from my time as an Eagle Scout.The head of Salomon Brothers, Billy Salomon, never went to college, no less business school. He never took a class in corporate responsibility and he didnt need to. Being ethical does not require a Masters degree. It requires having a conscience and following it. It requires being honest and truthful, and never lying or cheating.Let me give you a quick example there was a rule at Salomon against giving gifts to clients to win more business. When Billy caught someone sending a case of wine to a major client, he fired him on the spot. Period, end of story. It didnt matter that he was perhaps the most productive salesman in the company.You can s ay Billy over-reacted but I dont think so. The rules he asked us to follow he followed himself no exceptions. And when it came to ethics, there was no compromising.Billy treated everyone the same from senior partners to the custodial staff. No one was better than anyone else. And Billy believed if you were lucky enough to make some money, you had an obligation to give a percentage of it away to help others. In fact, he didnt ask you what the percentage should be, he told you and you did it.Ive been very lucky in my career. But my luckiest break wasnt getting fired although that was pretty lucky it turned out. My luckiest break was taking a job where I got to see the ethics I learned growing up put into practice in the workplace. And Id like to think the principles that I learned at Salomon have guided my life ever since.But when we look at todays world, its not clear that everyone with a degree in business has those principles. And thats one reason, I believe, that this great co untry of ours is suffering from an ethical crisis that is corroding our society.Today, Americans are questioning whether those in the private sector and in Washington can provide the moral leadership our country needs, both economically and politically. They see the rewards of the economy increasingly concentrated at the top. They see wealthy parents scamming the college admissions process. They see families unable to afford health care and housing in the worlds richest country. They see decades of discrimination based on race and ethnicity trapping another generation into poverty. And they wonder is our economic system breaking down?At the same time, if they are not blinded by partisanship when they look at Washington, D.C., they see truth and science being trampled with reckless abandon. They see the rule of law being attacked and undermined. They see a chorus of enablers who defend every lie and abuse of power. And they wonder is our political system breaking down, too?Now, as you may know, Ive never been much for party politics. Ive supported Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Hell, Ive actually been a Democrat, Republican, and independent.No party has a monopoly on good ideas or good people. But I believe all of us have an obligation to reject those who traffic in dishonesty and deceit. That is not a partisan position. That is a patriotic position.For full disclosure, back in 2016 at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia when the Republican nominee was promising to run our country like he ran his business, I said, God help us. And not just because he went to Wharton. Actually I wish I hadnt been right.But unfortunately, when we elect people to public schreibstube who have no interest in ethics, that depravity trickles down and it seeps into our culture.Thirty years ago, New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan a Harvard professor I should note described societys growing tolerance for illicit behavior as defining deviancy down.Today , we face the same problem only the bad behavior is not on city streets but in the halls of power in Washington. And as our political culture degenerates, so does our ability to address all the big challenges that we face.Now, the good news is there is a solution. In fact, I believe that the solution to our political problems is also the solution to our economic problems. And I can sum it up in one word integrity.In Econ 101, you were probably taught that markets are based on supply and demand. But for capitalism to really function, people need to have faith that they will be entering into generally fair exchanges that one side wont cheat on the other.Of course, not every person can be trusted to act with integrity, so we do have laws and regulations that are intended to guarantee it. Those legal controls dont always work and periodically, we do need to update them.For example, a century ago, Teddy Roosevelt took on the largest corporations that were destroying competition. Twent y five years later, Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal provided relief from a Great Depression that some thought would lead to the downfall of capitalism.For their leadership, T.R. and F.D.R. were reviled by many in the business world and considered traitors to their class. But their actions preserved the integrity of markets by restoring peoples faith in them.Now, Im as much of a capitalist as you will ever find, but anyone who believes that unfettered capitalism works hasnt read history.Today, we hear echoes of the challenges the Roosevelts faced. Industry consolidation has reached record levels, and is suppressing competition and choice. And more and more Americans especially in your generation are questioning whether capitalism is capable of creating a just society. Their faith in America and all that we represent is being shaken.If we do not act to restore it, the turmoil in our politics today will be only a prelude of whats to come, and that could shake the very foundations of our society.Graduates, we cannot allow those issues to fester. We must address them now. We must find new ways to build a capitalist society that is more dynamic and more secure, more affluent and more equal.So think of this as your next case study. And its the ultimate case study for our country, because its based on the ultimate question how do we restore faith in the promise of America and the future of the American dream?There are no silver bullets, but I believe all of you have a critical role to play. So let me offer you a few ideas on how you can help lead the way.First, start with yourself. Wherever your career leads you, be honest with your colleagues, clients and contractors. Dont ever try to take advantage of them. Dont hesitate to speak up when someone else does.Public faith in private markets rests on individual actions. Billy Salomon understood that. And I hope you will seek out organizations that are led by people who understand it, as well.Second, when applying f or a job, align yourself with companies that are engaged in philanthropy. I tell job applicants all the time, if you want the fruits of your labor the companys profits spent on education, public health, the arts, government innovation, and the environment, come to work at Bloomberg. If thats not what you want, youre not the right person for us.Philanthropy gives us a competitive advantage, we think, in recruiting and retaining talent. And I can tell you from personal experience it is also good for the bottom line, as good a thing a company can do.Third, give back on your own and dont wait. Ill never forget watching my father write a check for 50 bucks to the NAACP which was a lot of money for us when I was a kid. I asked him, Daddy, why? And he said, Because discrimination against anyone is a threat to everyone.And I can just tell you after 50-plus years in business and government, people have a hell of a lot more respect for those who make a difference in society than they do fo r people who just make money. And the networks that you will make through philanthropy will open up lots of new opportunities for your career.Gordon Gekko was wrong greed aint good.All of you have spent two years studying how to run and manage organizations. There are so many groups that could benefit from your expertise. So volunteer, serve, go into government. Just remember the difference between business and government business is a dog-eat-dog world. And government is exactly the reverse. So you can do it.Fourth, if and when you end up in an executive position, dont make one of the fundamental mistakes that I see businesses and boards make all the time under-valuing their labor force, and over-compensating their CEOs.Management often treats workers like widgets which theyre not. And boards treat CEOs like irreplaceable geniuses, which they rarely are.At Bloomberg, we pay employees very well, we invest in their training and education, and we offer industry-leading benefits. In r eturn, our employees pay us back ten-fold with their dedication and loyalty.Doing right by your employees pays. It really does. And there is no better way to strengthen capitalism than to give people a greater stake in its success.Fifth and finally, never self-deal. Ever. And avoid even the slightest perception of a conflict of interest.After I was elected mayor, I decided to refuse a $15 million city tax break that Bloomberg had already qualified for. And I waived the fees for the Bloomberg Terminals that the city agencies had under contract. And I certainly never charged taxpayers $300,000 in golf cart fees for my security team. I wouldve thought Wharton would teach its students not to do that, but who knew?But really, your reputation is everything. Dont sell it or trade it for anything.Finally, after following all of these principles, insist on no less from the people who ask for the most precious commodity you will ever own, and that is your vote.Elect people who understand that its their obligation to make capitalism work for everyone, and not be so naive to think other systems will be better. That means picking up where Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt left off, and modernizing capitalism for our time.America must always be a place where its possible to get rich through perspiration and innovation. But it must never be a place where the middle class steadily loses ground and where many of those feel trapped at the bottom.Unfortunately, that is the path we are on. And the further we go down that path, the more likely that the most extreme voices on both the left and right will attract large followings, win power, and do real harm to our country.Now, Im an optimist, and we will change direction I think, partly because of how business leaders are already taking on one of the biggest challenges that we face climate change.Today, Im glad to announce that HBS will hold an alumni conference next year, on investing in the age of climate change with Bloom berg Philanthropies support. Its another example of where doing right and doing good are aligned.Investors are demanding that businesses disclose the climate risks they face because it affects their bottom line. Ive helped spearhead a push for more transparency, through the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. And next year here at HBS, we will bring government and business leaders together to discuss how we can beschirrung the power of the market to protect the environment.Market forces are among the most powerful tools in the world. But whether its climate change, or income inequality, or gun violence, or any other issue, those forces must be guided by ethical leaders, or else the markets invisible hand can turn into a clenched fist.And when societys most defenseless take it on the chin, I can promise you they will fight back with unpredictable consequences and demand a better deal, as they should.Graduates, restoring the faith that Americans have been losing in our economic and political systems is a big job. If you wont lead it, who will?Youve been fortunate to spend two years on this pristine campus where even the squirrels seem to have come from the spa. But as you know, the real world can be dirty, unfair, and unjust, unless you insist otherwise. ECLIPSE Interns Continue the Put-A-Smile Effort in Puerto Rico ECLIPSE Interns Continue the Put-A-Smile Effort in Puerto Rico ECLIPSE Interns Continue the Put-A-Smile Effort in Puerto RicoStudents from the Aurora Mendez Charneco Elementary School in Puerto Rico enjoy the gift bags sent to them by the 2017-2018 ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) fr sichs as parte of the Put-A-Smile initiative.Earlier this year, the 2017-2018 class of ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) interns, inspired by the efforts of group of ASME members in California, decided to attempt to lift the spirits of school children in Puerto Rico, which is still slowly recovering from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria last frage.Spearheaded by ASME members and ECLIPSE interns Jonathan Jennings, Kushi Sellahennedige and Joseph Radisek, theirs was the second activity in the Put-A-Smile endeavor, a grassroots ASME member initiative to bring cheer to children affected by last years hurricanes in Texas and Puerto Rico. As previously reported in ASME News, several ASME members of the Orange County, Santa Clara Valley and Los Angeles Sections in California launched the program last fall when they sent gift bags to students at Lobit Elementary School in Dickinson, Texas, a community that was hit especially hard last summer by Hurricane Harvey, which flooded approximately 90 percent of homes in the area. William Rios and Andrea Nemesszeghy of the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez (UPRM) Campus ASME chapter spoke to the elementary school students about STEM-related careers during their ASME Links presentation at Aurora Mendez Charneco Elementary School.After hearing about the Put-A-Smile activity in California, Jennings and his fellow ECLIPSE interns began planning one of their own. Photo by Wil Haywood, Public Information The ASME Board of Governors (BOG) convened at the Societys New York headquarters on April 14 and 15 to address a number of topics concerning the Society. During the lively two-day meeting, Board members discussed a number of items, including the development of the Societys new strategy, ASME NOW, and the process of selecting the core technologies that would be the foundation of the Societys future product portfolio.During the meeting, BOG member John Goossen and Michael Ireland, ASMEs associate executive director for engineering, presented the Board with an update on ASME NOW, which is intended to enhance ASMEs relevance and impact to global constituents and establish the Society as the go-to organization for solving the worlds technology problems. To reach this objective, ASME will need to take a three-tiered approach, which will involve becoming more market facing, developing business development competency and product sophistication, and engaging its stakeholders and delivering value.Key to ASMEs success in becoming a more market-facing organization is the selection of a group of technologies to serve as the foundation of the Societys product portfolio. During his presentation, Ireland reviewed the Societys recent technology selection process activities, which included the recent gathering of 20 thought leaders from around the world to help ASME identify these technologies. During the workshop, the volunteers, who were named the Technology Advisory Panel (TAP), selected 13 techno logies they saw as most germane to ASME. (Read more about the TAP meeting here.) A group of select ASME staff members, the Staff Technology Team, will further narrow the list to three to five technologies, which will be presented to the Board for approval in June.During the meeting, ASME President Julio Guerrero led a discussion on the actions being taken to follow up on the international delegation trips members of the Board took to Peru, India and China, while Bobby Grimes, senior vice president of the TEC Sector, presented the Board with a report on the role of the Sector Management Committee. In his presentation on Fiscal Year 2017 planning, ASME President-Elect K. Keith Roe discussed the strategic focus for the coming fiscal year, which included two critical objectives effective strategy and improving how the Society operates. Executive Director Thomas Loughlin then shared his outlook for the future of ASME and reviewed the trends he believed would impact ASME during his presen tation, Association Future State One E.D.s View.Jeff Patterson, ASMEs new associate executive director of marketing, provided the Board with a summary of the current market environment. During his presentation, titled A Look At Market Trends and Their Implications, Patterson identified several trends that the Society should watch, including the emergence of Millennials as the dominant segment of the U.S. workforce, the growth of social media as a professional development platform, and the reality that content producers such as book publishers are rethinking traditional methods of bringing content to market. As a result, Patterson said, ASME must be aware of evolving conditions, open to new solutions, willing to experiment, and focused on results. In other meeting activity, the Board approved the reappointment of Kathryn Ingle and Keith Thayer as members of the Committee on Organization and Rules from June 2016 through June 2019, and the reappointment of Richard Goldstein, Webb Marn er and Reginald Vachon as Pension Plan Trustees from July 2016 through June 2019. In addition, the Board approved the appointment of Thomas Kurfess, Michel Margat, Shao Binan and Steven Wallace as members of the Council on Standards and Certification from June 2016 through June 2019. The appointments of Ankush Gupta, Marianne Chan and Siva Pilli as members of the Student and Early Career Development Council for the July 2016 to June 2017 term were also approved by Board at the meeting.BOG member Andrew Taylor was also named an ASME Fellow during the meeting. The company sells a grow pack with all the nutrients, seeds, and growth medium needed to get started. Of course, not every plant can grow to full size in a two-foot high box. So Damato and Morillas have curated a host of dwarf plants that will grow to maturity in the Niwa system. Niwa owners are by no means limited to the seeds provided by the company. To a certain demographic, the word hydroponic is loaded with connotations that involve the illicit drug industry. Damato says that companies in the hydroponic business have to choose one side or the other and that we are on the fruits and vegetables side. He is aware, however, that two guys have hacked it and are growing cannabis. Niwa has sold some 400 units in the U.S., as well as 50 in Canada and 250 in Europe. The next version will have more customization and versatility within the app. Damato also hopes to create a community of Niwa users who may want to compete against each other. Military College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP) Military College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP) The College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP) is an enlistment incentive for new recruits to the U.S. military. Like other such incentives authorized by Congress, each of the services is free to offer the program as it sees fit in order to meet established recruiting goals. Under CLRP, the military will repay a portion of eligible college loans for non-prior service military members. This program is for enlisted personnel only; officers are not eligible, and not every military occupational specialty (MOS) is eligible for CLRP. Congress has limited the maximum amount of payment to $65,000. However, within these limits, each of the services has applied their own maximums. At present, the Army and Navy will repay the maximum allowed by law for non-prior service active duty enlistments. The Army will pay up to $20,000 for Reserve enlistments (including the Army National Guard). The  Air Force will repay up to $10,000 for non-prior service, active duty enlistments. Additionally, the Navy Reserves will repay up to $10,000 for Navy Reserve enlistments.   The Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force Reserves do not offer the College Loan Repayment Program. However, the Air National Guard offers CLRP of up to $20,000, for designated shortage AFSCs (jobs). Qualifying Loans for CLRP To qualify for CLRP, a loan must be entered into before joining the military. The following loans qualify for the College Loan Repayment Program: Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students (ALAS)Stafford Student Loan, formerly known as the Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL)Parents Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). Must be incurred for the use of the individual contracting for the program (not others such as relatives)Consolidated Loan Program. Only covers the members education expensesFederally Insured Student Loans (FISL)Perkins Loan, formerly known as the National Direct Student Loan (NDSL)Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS) Eligibility for CLRP These criteria will vary based on the individual branch of the military. But for active duty personnel, they must have no prior military experience to qualify. In the Air Force and Navy active duty, personnel must be enlisted for a minimum of four years; in the Army active duty, the minimum enlistment is three years.   The enlistment requirements to receive CLRP are somewhat longer for the Reserve units.  For the Army and Navy Reserves, and Army and Air National Guard,  a minimum enlistment of six years is required. For the Army, soldiers must have a high school diploma and an overall score of 50 or higher on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).  For Army active duty, Army Reserves, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard must enlist in a specific MOS that qualifies for the program. These are subject to change based on need, so its best to check with a local recruiter to see which jobs are eligible for CLRP. For the Army Reserves, Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard, the maximum amount repayable (up to $20,000) varies by MOS as well.   Within the Army and Navy Reserves, those with prior military service are eligible.   And perhaps most importantly: The CLRP must be included in the recruits enlistment contract in order for it to apply.   CLRP and the GI Bill An important caveat to be aware of when considering whether to request CLRP. Any active duty personnel seeking CLRP are not eligible for the  Montgomery GI Bill for the same enlistment period. To be clear: Active duty members may participate in the GI Bill during a subsequent enlistment period, even if they used CLRP during their first enlistment.   One would not be able to use the GI Bill, however, until after 30 months into the second enlistment.   These provisions  do not apply to members of the Reserves and National Guard, who can use the Reserve Montgomery GI Bill, and the CLRP during the same enlistment period. Member Responsibilities for CLRP To qualify for CLRP, military members must remain on enlisted active duty while enrolled in the program. Loans must be in good standing, i.e., not in default, and the member is responsible for paying any fees and accrued interest. CLRP payments are made directly to the lender, not the military member, and are considered taxable income.   Payments CLRP payments are made directly to the lender. The first payment is not made until after the member has completed one year of service. For active duty personnel, the military repays 33? percent of the outstanding principal balance of the loan annually, or $1,500, whichever is greater, for each year of service. The Army and Navy Reserves will repay 15 percent of the outstanding principal balance of the loan annually, or $1,500, whichever is greater, for each year of service. The Air National Guard will pay 15 percent or $5,000 (whichever is greater) annually against the outstanding principal balance.

Life as a Private Investigator Life as a Private Investigator The field of private investigations (private eye or P.I. for short) has long held our fascination. Through radio shows, mystery and thriller novels, film and television, weve been intrigued and attracted by the exploits of the likes of Thomas Magnum, Sam Spade and, of course, Sherlock  Holmes. Its only natural, then, that people who may be inclined toward jobs in criminal justice and criminology would be interested in pursuing a career as a real-life private eye. Fortunately for them, the U.S. governments Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the field of private investigations is expected to grow by 21 percent by the year 2020, a faster-than-average growth rate when compared to other careers. The Unique Job of a Private Investigator Real life P. I. Michael Miller has found tremendous success building his own private investigations firm, called MILLERGROUP Intelligence. His firm specializes in risk assessment, background investigations, security, and due diligence investigations.   Much of MILLERGROUPs most recent success, however, has come from the growing world of reality television, and Mr. Miller spends a lot of his time lately conducting background investigations and risk assessment of potential reality show contestants. Miller has a bachelors degree in criminal justice from California State University, Sacramento, as well as the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Academy. He has owned his own firm since 1995  and has worked in the criminal justice industry for more than 20 years, as a reserve deputy and a fraud investigator for the City of New York. He was more than happy to talk about his career and share some of his advice and experience with me: Interview with a Real Private Investigator The Balance: With 20 years of experience in private investigations, you have quite an extensive background and résumé. But what was it that got you interested in criminal justice and criminology to begin with? Michael Miller: I was probably 8 or 9 years old, watching PI shows like Mannix on television, and pretty much knew then I had found my calling. As the years passed, more and more PI television shows like Magnum PI, Barnaby Jones, Remington Steele, and Moonlighting, as well as police shows such as Baretta, Starsky Hutch, Adam-12, Dragnet, Kojak, Columbo, and McCloud continued to peak my interest, I knew I had to end up in this intriguing and exciting field. I just didn’t know I’d make it a reality someday.     TB: How, if at all, do you feel your degree in criminal justice has helped you in your career? Did it prepare you for the jobs youve held since? MM: I wanted to go to college, mainly to have a college degree.  I knew that wherever I ended up, it would help me get there. Although my grade point average wasn’t as important to me as just graduating, I ended up doing better than I expected simply because I was so enthralled by my field of study (criminal justice). Many of my professors had law enforcement backgrounds (from police to FBI), making for some great stories to keep me awake in class. My Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice certainly helped secure my future in the investigative field. Out of college, before the internet was invented, I didn’t have a clue how to become a private investigator. I took a job with the City of New York as a Welfare Fraud Investigator. TB: You spent some time working as a fraud investigator for the City of New York. What made you decide to try your hand at private investigations? MM: ...working for a big bureaucracy, it’s often frowned upon if you work too hard, otherwise known as rocking the boat. Just do the minimum required until you retire, then get your pension. That wasn’t for me.  I was young, motivated and eager to solve cases. My wings weren’t going to be tapered, and as a private investigator, the sky was to become my limit. Success was entirely up to me; no longer based on annual evaluations by a supervisor. At the end of my first year, I met a private investigator who was involved in one of my cases. Arthur Schultheiss, a wonderful man to whom I will be forever grateful, offered me a job as a surveillance investigator, which included a brand new company car (a nondescript charcoal gray Chevy sedan), a company credit card and business cards. I had found heaven. At 24, I was well on my way to my dream job. At 27, I became a licensed PI in California. Most PIs were retired law enforcement folks and much older than I was. My age and lack of experience actually gave me an edge. To bigger firms, such as the celebrity clientele threat assessment and risk management firm where I worked into my early thirties, I was “moldable.” In 1995, at 32 years old, I opened my own firm. I have never regretted that decision. Perhaps there are more exciting careers like being a professional athlete or a movie star, but being a spy is my paradise. Mentors such as Arthur Schultheiss, and later, Gavin de Becker, became my key to a Hollywood ending.         TB: Has your experience in the police academy and as a reserve officer helped you as a private investigator? MM: Yes. The police academy is all about teamwork, integrity, honor, and discipline. It’s an eye-opening, confidence building experience this former recruit will never forget. Grueling at times, yet worth every “sir yes sir” moment. The academy has certainly helped in my investigative career, everything from managing security agents on the red carpet at Golden Globe Award shows, to tailing and arresting a hit and run suspect, to intercepting a celebrity stalker arriving at LAX. The police academy instilled in me the faith and conviction to get the job done. TB: How does working as a private investigator differ from working as an investigator with a government law enforcement agency? What are some interesting things about working as a private investigator? MM: As a private investigator, the potential is unlimited. We don’t have the same restrictions and constraints placed on government employees. We make our own hours and to an extent, architect of our own fate. In the private sector, we obviously don’t have the same job security and benefits/perks, but I’ve always preferred the freedom and ability to write my own ending. With risk comes the potential for great reward.         TB: How has the field of private investigations changed over your career? MM: The INTERNET!!  When I started in this business in the late 80s, the internet didn’t exist.  We used to go to courthouses to search through records, to pull files, whether on microfiche or manually toiling through old A-Z catalogs. If we had a case out of town, we’d hire investigators in those areas and have them do the same. The internet has simplified things greatly. The downside, albeit very small, is that someone has to manually enter the information on the web, so there’s room for error. Some PIs still go to courthouses to double check their online searches. We can access DMV, credit bureaus, county courthouses, federal courts and so much more nowadays by just entering a few keystrokes. Social Media and Google have also changed the way we conduct investigations. People make it easier for us by putting so much personal information out there, and often without any privacy restrictions. If you’re reading this, make your stuff private! Don’t let the world in; only a select few you actually know and trust. In his wise mentoring, Gavin de Becker told me, once you let the toothpaste out of the tube, it’s much harder to get it back in. TB: Your firm handles background investigations and risk assessments for the entertainment industry, particularly for reality television shows. Do you view this as a growing trend for private investigators?  How did you get into this niche? MM: The screening of reality television applicants became a growing trend over 10 years ago. I received a call from a producer in 2000 when Big Brother was coming to the U.S., and CBS wanted them to vet the show’s participants. His call came right after a show aired around that time called Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? Thanks to mistakes made by the millionaire show, the trend really got started. They did very cursory background checks for their show, and as I recall, their “multi-millionaire” was minus the “multi, we” and he had other issues such as having had a restraining order filed against him for domestic violence. Suffice it to; say we have successfully conducted several thousand background investigations on participants of reality programs for various television networks ever since.           TB: Why are background investigations important for entertainment companies? MM: In additional to my previous answer, the networks want to limit their liability as much as possible. The more they know about an applicant before the show airs, the better equipped they are to handle and address anything derogatory that comes up. TB: What do you enjoy most about your job, and why do you continue to do it? MM: Surveillance is probably my favorite part of the job. Providing people with peace of mind is another highlight. This could come from returning stolen property or determining if a spouse is having an affair.  I am also particularly fond of delegating work to my staff. TB: What does it take to be successful as a private investigator? MM: Here are some great and relevant words that come to mind, in no particular order: Patience, professionalism, fortitude, desire, perseverance, ambition, passion and motivation. TB: How much should your average investigator expect to earn, and how much might they earn if they become reputable? MM: This is a tricky question. Most PIs are retired law enforcement with lifetime pensions and health insurance, and many of them do this on a part-time basis. Then you have the PIs like me who have made this their careers. We don’t have pension plans or other funds coming in later, so we have to make the most of this career choice. If someone gets his or her PI license and just works for other PIs, they can expect to make about $35 to $45 per hour. Just like attorneys, our rates vary greatly. Some PIs bill clients $50 per hour while others bill $350 per hour. I’d rather not get too specific. However, a reputable PI can earn well over $100k per year. Much depends on the scope of their work, type of clientele, size of their staff, etc.       TB: What advice do you have for someone who is trying to decide whether or not they want to work as a private investigator, or for someone just starting out in the field? MM: I’m pretty sure if someone is trying to decide whether or not to get into this field, they’ll have a better idea after reading all of this. With me, I knew it as a kid. Every television show I watched reinforced these feelings. I just had to figure out how to make it a reality. To start, I recommend sending letters to private investigators and express your interest. Snail-mailing a letter is preferable to an email, although an email and/or a phone call is a good way to follow-up. Do whatever it takes to get on their payroll. Only as an employee can you later get your own PI license. Requirements vary in all states. However, I believe you need 3 years experience (working for a licensed PI) in California. You can substitute law enforcement detective work for some of the required hours. A college degree, Associate or Bachelor’s, also qualifies toward your required hours. All the information is available on the Internet.  There are many reputable PI firms out there. Do your homework. Check licensing bureaus, as well as Secretary of State records, both of which will often list any complaints against a company. TB: If you have anything else youd like to add, please feel free to share it. MM: I love what I do, 25 years after entering this field in New York, and 21 years after getting my own PI license in California. I still like meeting people and hearing them say, “Wow, I’ve never met a private investigator before.” If you have a passion for it like I did and still do, go for it. It makes a good television show, but it makes an even better real-life career.   Private Investigator Careers Can Let You Follow Your Passion One of the most important things any job seeker can do is to do their homework and try to make an educated decision in finding the type of job they want based on their strengths, talents, and interests.
